For many visitors to Morocco, Chefchaouen is near the top of the list of places to visit (and for good reason). We receive many requests for advice on including Chefchaouen in Morocco travel itineraries. So the question is, what is the best way to do this?

Almost all visits to Chefchaouen start from either Tangier or Fes. This is because Chefchaouen is between Tangier and Fes, but a bit closer to Tangier. It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen. It takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes to drive from Chefchaouen to Fes.

Some choose to stay overnight in Chefchaouen before continuing their journey. In our opinion, one night is enough. Chefchaouen is a small town, and it doesn’t take very long to see everything. A stay of more than one night is not necessary. Unless you plan to hike a lot in the mountains. Chefchaouen is in a very beautiful part of the countryside.

Is it possible in one day?

If your itinerary is tight, you may want to do the full journey from Tangier to Fes in one day, with a stop in Chefchaouen. This way, you won’t miss the famous blue town. It is a long day, but it is possible. Chefchaouen is small, so you don’t need much time to see and appreciate it.

The total driving time is about 6 hours, not including the stop in Chefchaouen. Most visitors spend no longer than 3 hours in Chefchaouen. On our day trips from Tangier to Fes via Chefchaouen (or vice versa), we limit the wait in Chefchaouen to 3 hours. For safety, you will have the same driver all day, and the roads require a lot of concentration.

Will we have enough time in Chefchaouen?

Yes. Many visitors overestimate the time they will need in Chefchaouen. It takes 20 minutes to walk across town. All the main sites and attractions are in or near the Blue Medina. For most people, 3 hours is enough to see everything and have lunch before continuing. This is a long day trip, with 6 hours of driving. So, by the end, most people feel tired!
