Chefchaouen Day Trip: Transport
There are two types of public taxis in Morocco: petit taxis and grand taxis. What is the difference?
Taxi in Tangier
Petit taxis are great for hopping around the city, but they are not allowed to leave the city perimeter. Petit taxis are common. They are small. So, if you’re in a group, you may need to take more than one taxi. Yet, taking a day trip to Chefchaouen, we are more interested in grand taxis. These taxis are bigger than the petit ones and people use them for transport between cities. They are often a cream color, like the one shown in the picture to the right of this text. Generally, in a grand taxi, you only pay for your seat rather than the entire vehicle. You will share the vehicle with other customers. You may have to wait until someone fills all the other seats. Grand taxis can hold 6 passengers, so it can get a bit tight, especially on long journeys. Of course, you can always buy all the seats in the vehicle, but this is more expensive.
When taking a grand taxi from Tangier to Chefchaouen, remember to change taxis in Tetouan. Tetouan lies about halfway between Tangier and Chefchaouen. You must negotiate a price for a taxi from Tangier to Tetouan. Then, negotiate another price for a taxi from Tetouan to Chefchaouen. Each journey takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. If you can speak Arabic, negotiating a lower price will likely be much easier. French is helpful. But its use by tourists may make it harder. Spanish is not a common language and will not offer significant help in this situation. English lacks widespread use. So, if you don’t speak French or Arabic, learn some French phrases. They will help you negotiate and explain where you want to go.

These prices exclude tips but should include everything else. You may have to pay more for the driver to wait for you during your Chefchaouen day trip.
